When you join the Garden Club of St Petersburg you also become a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), the National Garden Clubs’ Deep South Region (DSGC), the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. (FFGC), and Florida Federations’ District XIII.  All of these organizations come together to promote the love of gardening, floral design, and civic and environmental responsibility.

 

The University of Florida IFAS (UF/IFAS) is another phenomenal resource; our local office is at the Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo.   Below is quick information and links for some of the many resources available for learning about gardening or exploring gardens here in Florida Zone 10A. 

The National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) is an international, educational, and charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the love of gardening, floral design, and civic and environmental responsibility. As an NGC member, you gain access to tailored benefits designed to meet your needs as a gardening enthusiast or horticulture professional. 
 
The NGC membership includes over 5,000 garden clubs and 165,000 members across the United States, and includes gardeners, horticulturists, landscape designers, and community advocates passionate about plants and the environment. NGC provides education, resources, and national networking opportunities for our members while coordinating the efforts of state and local garden clubs in the U.S. and abroad to promote environmental stewardship and enhance communities through gardening.
 
NGC manages four schools that offer continuing education with a range of educational opportunities on the art and science of the environment, gardening, landscape design, and flower arranging. Check the NGC website calendar for the schedule of classes.
 

The Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc. (DSGC) is a National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) member. The six-member states of that comprise the DSGC are Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
The DCGC is dedicated to advancing the National Garden Club, Inc.’s objectives and coordinating the interests and projects of the six states in the region. Activities focus on horticulture, gardening, landscaping, floral design, civic beautification, and environmental concerns, emphasizing fellowship, scholarship, stewardship, and leadership. Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. (FFGC) promotes the love of gardening, floral and landscape design, civic and environmental responsibility by providing education, resources and networking opportunities for our members, youth and the community.

A charter member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. and a member of Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc., FFGC now has over 150 community-based in the state of Florida and nearly 10,000 members across 12 districts. Our members belong to their local garden clubs, located in every corner of Florida, and range from inquisitive budding gardeners to knowledgeable veterans with many decades of experience who are dedicated to serving their local communities through beautification projects, sending local youth to Camp Wekiva, and serving as environmental leaders at the local level. The main objectives of the FFGC are to further the education of the members and the public in the fields of gardening, horticulture, botany, floral design, landscape design, environmental awareness through the conservation of natural resources, civic beautification, nature studies, and to instill in our youth the love of gardening and the respect for and protection of the environment. We encourage the erection of memorials to Veterans of the United States Armed Forces and landscaped gardens around them. We serve to coordinate the interests of the federated garden clubs in the State of Florida to further our mission.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is part of a nationwide network of land-grant universities providing research-based information to the public and offers educational programs and expert advice on various topics!

The Pinellas County office extension is right near us in Walsingham Park in conjunction with the Florida Botanical Gardens. (12520 Ulmerton Road, Largo). It is an amazing resource – both on-line, via email, and in person

Through UF/IFAS, the Florida Friendly home landscape offers many resources to help you create a Florida-friendly landscape, including understanding their 9 principles.

The Florida Wildflower Foundation protects, connects and expands native wildflower habitats through education, research, planting, and conservation. Their website has many resources on native plants. for more info, click on icon above.

The Florida Native Plant Society’s mission is to champion Florida’s native plants and their habitats. They have a phenomenal searchable database for native plants. For more info, click on icon bove.

Tampa Bay Watch is dedicated to fostering a healthy Tampa Bay watershed through community-driven restoration projects, education programs, and outreach initiatives. For more info, click on icon above.

The City of St Petersburg has a plethora of City Parks to explore. Their mission – to preserve, protect, maintain and enhance the city’s parklands and recreational facilities and engage people in leisure activities that contribute to their quality of life.  Our own Coconut Park is one of their hidden gems.

The Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo is a 100-acre park, featuring 26 different areas with shady trails, beautiful blooms, and a children’s garden. The gardens are maintained by the Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources Department, and supported by the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation through courses and activities, the annual (and wonderful) Holiday Lights in the Gardens plus other festivals. The Florida Botanical Gardens is an oasis designed to inspire and educate visitors by reconnecting them to nature and has free admission.  For. more information, click on icon above.

Folly Farms Nature Preserve in Safety Harbor is a hidden gem for experiencing local plants. This park has something for every nature lover. Walk through the native and butterfly gardens, leading to the natural walking trail that leads around the whole property.  For more info, click on icon above.
