The Floral Design Study Series is a unique series of lectures, demonstrations, and critiqued, workshops sponsored by FFGC. Talented, accredited instructors teach the classes. Each instructor is a National Garden Clubs, Inc. Flower Show Judge. This is a comprehensive program by Bob Thomas, internationally renowned floral designer from Florida. Bob was responsible for the Basic Six Units. Program focuses on Basic Floral Design for the home and for Flower Shows using fresh LIVE plant materials and flowers. Those who attend all six lectures and workshops will receive a Certificate suitable for framing. Live Materials, greens and flowers are supplied for the first three classes. What a wonderful way to learn, to enjoy friendships and the beauty of creation!

Unit I Containers, Basic Tools and Vertical Designs

  • What is flower arranging?
  • Basic tools and mechanics.
  • Basic components of a design.
  • Types of containers. 
  • Basic forms of plant materials
  • An overview featuring the demonstration of vertical,  asymmetrical, crescent designs. 

Unit II Conditioning Plant Material & Triangular Designs 

  • Care, cutting and grooming of plant materials.
  • Mechanics for different containers. 
  • ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
  • Demonstration of symmetrical, asymmetrical, and diagonal designs. 

Unit III Elements and Principles of Design & Curved Designs 

  • Compatibility of plant materials with containers.
  • Selecting materials for curved designs and geometrically-based line designs.
  • Use of fruits and vegetables in designs.
  • Demonstration of Crescent and Hogarth designs.

Unit IV Table Settings and Horizontal Designs

  • Table settings
  • Co-ordination of floral designs with table components. 
  • Demonstrations of functional and exhibition tables for Flower Show. 

Unit V Accessories, Features & Bases 

  • Use of bases
  • Use of features and featured objects.
  • Use of accessories.
  • Demonstration of a Feature, Featured Object, Accessories and Bases 

Unit VI Transporting Materials & Expressive Designs  

  • Conditioning and transporting plant materials to flower show. 
  • Discussion of Distinction, Tricolor,  Designer's Choice Award.
  • Demonstration of Expressive Design and Interpretive Design.
